Question:How much is the dinar mentioned in the Book of Diyah equivalent to in today's standard gold weight according to the opinion of the esteemed Marja’?
Answer:In the name of Allah, the gold dinar equals three-quarters (¾) of a mithqal sirafi (the standard weight of a mithqal used by gold dealers). Allah knows best.
Question:If a person wants to pay blood money (diyah) to the victim for an injury less than killing—such as striking that causes redness or bruising of the face—and he wishes to convert the Islamic dinar into its value in gold: should he pay the diyah according to the price of gold at the time the injury occurred or at the time of paying the diyah?
Answer:In the name of Allah, know, my son, that diyah in gold is determined by weight, not by market value, and the specified weight of gold constitutes the diyah. Since gold and silver currency is not commonly available nowadays, he should pay the value of the diyah based on the gold price at the time of payment. Allah knows best.
Question:Is there a difference in blood money (compensation) between intentional murder, manslaughter, and accidental killing? What is blood money anyway?
Answer:In the name of Allah, blood money is the same for all cases. The difference lies in determining who is obligated to pay the blood money. In cases of intentional murder and manslaughter, it is the responsibility of the killer. In cases of pure accidental killing, it is the responsibility of the guardian or family of the deceased. The blood money for the murder of a Muslim is either 100 camels, or 1,000 dinars, and each dinar is equivalent to three-quarters of the weight of the barley grain used for measurement in banking, or 1,000 sheep, or ten thousand dirhams. Each dirham is equivalent to 12.6 mithqals (measurement of weight) of silver. Allah knows best.
Question:Is the blood money calculated in pure 24 karat gold, or it is calculated with 21 karat gold, which is customary in the country?
Answer:In the name of Allah, it is sufficient to do with the gold which is customary in the country. Allah knows best.
